Chevernaise Character Creation

Chevernaise Spirit Dancer
Above: A Spirit Dancer attempts to assuage the anger of a vengeful spirit.

New Careers:

Spirit Dancer (requirements: the Trait of Darkened and the Gift of Hospitality: Chevernaise): applies to Augury, Dance, Herbalism, and Darkened Lore

Spirit Dancers are Chevernaise who use their Darkened nature as their profession. When an angry spirit must be appeased, a Spirit Dancer is summoned. The position is considered sacred amongst the Chevernaise, and Spirit Dancers are regarded as a breed apart. Celibacy is expected of them, at least so long as they are still practicing their art, but it is not unknown for them to have children. Unlike a Shaman, Spirit Dancers are not normally considered tribal leaders except in situations where spirits are involved. Many Spirit Dancers actually claim no single tribe as their own, but travel wherever they are needed.

Ceremonial Drummer: applies to Music, Augury, Song and Darkened Lore

Drummers generally serve as assistants to a Spirit Dancer. They only rarely have the Darkened trait. Those that do are usually Spirit Dancers in training. They provide ritual music (and often chanting) so that the Dancer can concentrate on the Darkened Paths. Such "music" is usually quite repetitive, but the beat must keep time with the Dancer's ritual as it progresses, so it is more difficult than it might sound at first.

Scapegoat (requirements: the Trait of Darkened, the Flaw of Shunned, and the Sin Eating skill): applies to Survival, Herbalism, Augury, and Darkened Lore

A "Scapegoat" is someone who is responsible for taking all of the sins of a community onto themselves using the Sin Eating path. It is not exactly an honorable profession. The scapegoat is only welcomed when it is time to perform their duties, and otherwise shunned. Scapegoats are generally Darkened Chevernaise who have proven incapable of learning the trade of Spirit Dancer, often due to physical or mental defects. Not all who are touched by the shadow of the spirit world are able to emerge unharmed.

This is not to say that a scapegoat cannot learn the other Darkened Paths. Indeed, they are sometimes frighteningly good at them, especially those whose minds have been twisted and torn by their miserable lives.

Shaman (requirements: Local Investiture in their tribe): applies to Augury, Darkened Lore, Leadership and Medicine

A shaman is a tribal elder (or possibly a tribal leader) who is trusted to handle spiritual matters, particularly those involving the Darkened Paths. Most Chevernaise tribes have a shaman, who may be a retired Spirit Dancer. Not all shaman actually have the Darkened trait, but many do.

New Flaws:

Shunned (Common, Strong; -4 points): Your character is tolerated by most people, but only just barely. Most folk won't talk to you any longer than necessary and you are widely distrusted. You generally have to live alone, and would not be welcome in most towns. You may be considered bad luck, your family may have a bad reputation, or your occupation may be something that most people consider shameful.
