Magical Divisions

Types of mages/magic I want to support...

  • Spells of Abjuration and Summoning... for bringing things to you and warding them off. Works especially well on Avatars, Elementals, Golems and other extremely magical creatures. Not so hot vs regular planesfolk.
  • Elemental magic, if only for Elementals to have. Spells to create and control fire, earth, air and water. Possibly an overlap with Abjuration & Summoning as far as affecting elementals goes.
  • Plain old evocation of magical energies. Magic missiles, walls of force, lightning bolts. Possibly some overlap with Elemental magic, as far as fireballs and such go. Might include stuff like Flight, TK and Feather Fall, too.
  • Mind-affecting magic, like hypnotism, paralysis, suggestion, etc.
  • Illusions and other sensory magic. Stuff like clairvoyance, mobile illusions, seeing in the dark, etc.
  • Nature magic. Druidic stuff. Growing and controlling plants, calming or controlling wild animals. Possibly a little overlap in throwing lightning around, but probably only outdoors. Weather control in general.
  • "Divine" magic. Stuff that alters realms. Creating and detecting portals... conjuring up permanent additions to a realm, etc. Very difficult and draining. Most mortal mages can't muster the mana costs for the high end spells.
  • Necromantic magic. Resurrecting the dead. Animating corpses (although that might well fall under Summoning). Hm. Actually, most of this could fall under Summoning. How about healing? Should that just fall under Nature? I could see that. Since I'm going with an "alignmentless" setting that's all shades of gray, I'm not sure I want any sort of actually "white" or "black" magic.
  • Similarly, Metamagic. I may just say that Metamagic stuff is present in every art to a certain degree (the most potent stuff would be in the Divine sphere). You can work counter-magic, create magical pools, create mana barriers, etc. Abjuration & Summoning would be the big ones for this, of course, but its possible for the others to work out something similar.
