Drives again
An alternate way of handling Drives might be to represent them with a die, like a stat. The maximum size of your Drives would depend upon how "epic" the GM wants the game to be...
| Style | Maximum Drive Rating |
| Gritty | d6 |
| Realistic | d8 |
| Heroic | d12 |
| Cinematic | 2d12 |
This differs from my current system in a few ways:
- Additional dice will rarely increase your maximum result above 12, whereas a bonus can.
- Adding dice makes it harder for folks to botch when their drive kicks in, whereas bonuses don't.
- Doesn't require any math, just extra dice.
- There's room for a lot more range of ratings... just a max of d8 allows for 3 possible ratings, whereas my bonus system only uses +1 and +2 (doubled when the drive is strongly triggered).
- Extra dice is going to be most useful when you have little or no skill; bonuses are most effective when you've already got good dice to roll for it.
It seems like either would work, they've just got a slightly different flavor.
